Visionary of Afrofuturism and Speculative Survival

Octavia E. Butler was a groundbreaking African-American science fiction writer whose work redefined the boundaries of speculative fiction. With haunting clarity, she explored themes of survival, hierarchy, race, gender, and power in dystopian futures that mirror our present. Butler’s work continues to shape the fields of Afrofuturism, feminist sci-fi, and climate fiction.

She was the first science fiction writer to win a MacArthur “Genius” Grant, and her prescient novels like Parable of the Sower are now considered essential reading for understanding the psychological and spiritual costs of systemic collapse.
